I write this first post ironically, as I myself, must learn to turn the light switch OFF!

Upon reflecting over the past 6 weeks, our very FIRST 6 weeks as an Acton Academy, I ask myself what is it that I have heard most from our WWV parents?

As a parent myself, I empathize with so much of what I am asked and hear from each one of our Owl’s families. I too, worry about how much my child eats and drinks, if they are cool or warm enough, if they are resting well or being kind. The concerns, worries and questions never seem to cease, no matter how well our child is doing or how old they grow.

However, there is a common thread I have been noticing between many of our parent’s concerns. That their child seems dysregulated, and overly exhausted upon pickup and at home in the afternoons after attending WWV.

I may not have any of the correct answers, but I can offer my observations and opinions and share with you a world class example that I am posting below.

Our “light” switches are simply turned on all day long. The Owls are working tirelessly at play, work, maintaining friendships, managing themselves to uphold rules, change clothing, feed animals, sharing, and so very much more. Even when we have slow moments, dedicated rest times, sit spots, or hammock times, our Owls are ON. I can feel the energy, I can feel the invisible motion within them. I feel it within myself too. I suppose the excitement of any newness, mental or physical, creates a buzz that invokes a new energy within. Whether wanted or not!

As in the time that Forest School was new, or when your child first began their academic experience outside of the home, this too shall pass. My only suggestion is to acknowledge the exhaustion, the dysregulation, and be your Owls resting post. Help them find some quiet, some peace, a moment to Turn Off at the end of the day. You are their home, you are where they can let out everything they may have been working so hard to hold together all day.

One very inspiring post to share, written by a seasoned Acton Academy parent:
